Metacafe promotes itself as, ‘the world's leading independent online video site’ that helps the public to view short-form original videos from a wide range of creators.’ The site is said to attract over 47 million viewers each month.

Metacafe has a broad focus and presents programming from emerging talents through to established Hollywood big shots.

You can browse videos online by category, highest rating, most viewed, most recent or most discussed. You can also search the entire site.

There are also additional features on different sections of the site; the music category has an alphabetical search function, the films have genre categories. The navigation on Metacafe successfully lead us to the content we were searching for.

Metacafe sells itself as a site where ‘videos are user-generated, user-selected, user-reviewed and user-rewarded.’ You can share, download and embed Metacafe videos. There is also the option to make comments and even edit the titles and tags of viewed videos.

Is this site invaded by commercials? We watched a range of videos and evaluated how many annoying adverts popped up before we could view what we wanted… .

There were adverts on the site but they did not distract from general viewing. However, some sections, such as the movie and computer games category, included lots of trailers.

In this respect, as with YouTube, Metacafe has a bit of a confused line between advertising and content. We weren’t quite sure how this policy complied with their criteria for content needing to ‘amaze, inspire and make viewers laugh’. (see comments on Uploads)

Metacafe distinguishes itself from other video sharing sites such as YouTube, aiming to deliver high quality entertainment in the form of short video clips. It strives for a ‘sophisticated’, audience-driven approach.
The video company has a growing diversity of partners including ‘top movie studios, music labels, professional sports leagues, television networks, video game publishers and best-of-the-web production firms’.
The site appears to have lofty creative aspirations and be innovative in its approach but we are not so sure about its audience - 2 out of their top 3 top video channels are porn!

How easy to use is the video upload tool? Are there clear guidelines? Are there privacy options? What is the limit of the size and type of video file that can be uploaded?.
Uploads are vetted and all material needs to be:
1.    Short-form –  the average length of video on Metacafe is just 90 seconds.
2.    Entertaining – This video sharing site has the aim of ‘amazing, inspiring and making viewers laugh.’ No hard news, political ramblings and the like – content is kept light hearted.
Submitted clips are not automatically uploaded; they need to pass ‘Community Auditions’ with a review panel of over 80,000 voluntary raters.  This site is truly designed by the public for the public.
Compared to YouTube, Metacafe is more selective and ‘owned’ by the public, who ultimately determine the content on the site.
